Žemės gelmėse slypi milžiniškas neatrastas vandenynas

Žemės paviršiuje tyvuliuojantys vandenynai gali atrodyti įspūdingi, tačiau nei vienas neprilygsta tam, kas vyksta giliai po pluta. Mokslininkų tyrimai rodo, kad 410–660 km gylyje tūno milžiniški kiekiai vandens – jo tame rezervuare daugiau nei visuose vandenynuose kartu sudėjus. Tai atskleidė reto mineralo, ringvudito, analizė.

Žemės mantija yra įkaitusių uolienų sluoksnis tarp planetos branduolio ir plutos. Pati mantija skirstoma į viršutinį ir apatinį sluoksnius. Mokslininkai jau seniai svarstė, kad tarp šių sluoksnių esančioje pereinamojoje zonoje gali būti ypatingų mineralų, kuriuose yra įstrigusio vandens. Tačiau iki šiol tiesioginių to įrodymų stigo.

Siekdami išsiaiškinti, ar pereinamojoje zonoje išties yra vandens, mokslininkai atliko eksperimentus su ringvuditu, analizavo mantiją skrodžiančias seismines bangas ir tyrinėjo įvairius modelius. Jie nustatė, kad gilyn tekanti mantijos medžiaga lydosi, kirsdama ribą tarp pereinamosios zonos ir apatinės mantijos (šio proceso metu iš medžiagos pašalinamas vanduo).

„Jei mes stebime šį lydymąsi, tuomet toje pereinamojoje zonoje turi būti vanduo, – teigė seismologas Brandonas Schmandtas iš Naujosios Meksikos universiteto (JAV). – Pereinamojoje zonoje gali būti daug vandens – ko gero, tiek pat, kiek visuose Žemės vandenynuose kartu sudėjus.“

Ankstesni ringvudito tyrimai parodė, kad vanduo gali sudaryti apie 1,5 proc. šio mineralo masės.

Vandeningas mineralas

Ringvuditas yra retas mineralas, kuris susiformuoja iš olivino (magnio, geležies silikatas) esant ypač aukštam slėgiui ir temperatūrai – tokios sąlygos ir yra Žemės mantijos pereinamojoje zonoje. Laboratoriniai tyrimai parodė, kad minerale gali būti vandens, tiesa, tai nėra mums pažįstamas skystis, ledas ar garai – jis įstrigęs ringvudito molekulėse hidroksido jonų (deguonies ir vandenilio atomų) pavidalu.

Tyrėjai žinojo, kad kristalinė ringvudito struktūra leido išlaikyti vandenį pereinamojoje mantijos zonoje, tačiau kirtus apatinės mantijos ribą, dėl padidėjusio slėgio ir temperatūros, ši struktūra pakinta. Naujoji struktūra nebeleidžia išlaikyti vandens, taigi jis lieka pereinamojoje zonoje. „Lydymasis tėra procesas, skirtas atsikratyti vandens“, – aiškino B.Schmandtas.

Siekdamas patikrinti šią hipotezę, geofizikas Stevenas Jacobsenas iš Ilinojaus šiaurės vakarų universiteto su kolegomis atliko laboratorinius eksperimentus. Jie sukūrė sintetinį ringvuditą ir atkūrė tas sąlygas, kurias šis mineralas patirtų pereinamojoje mantijos zonoje – įspraustas tarp deimantų, jis buvo kaitinamas lazeriais. Vėliau temperatūra ir slėgis buvo padidinti, kad atitiktų situaciją apatinėje mantijoje. Ringvuditas virto kitu mineralu – silikato perovskitu.

„Jei pereinamojoje zonoje yra panašios būsenos ringvudito, kuris tempiamas žemyn, jis turėtų išsilydyti, – sakė B.Schmandtas. – Kadangi lydantis keičiasi seisminių bangų savybės, tai yra taikinys, į kurį aš galiu nusitaikyti.“

Pasinaudojęs JAV seismometrų tinklu „Earthscope USArray“, šis mokslininkas analizavo mantijos sluoksnius kertančias seismines bangas. Paaiškėjo, kad, pereinant į apatinę mantiją, šios bangos sulėtėdavo – tai patvirtino, kad ties šia riba vyksta lydymasis.

Vėliau išsilydžiusi medžiaga gali grįžti į pereinamąją zoną, o mineralai atgauna savybes, kurios leidžia jiems išlaikyti vandenį, teigia B.Schmandtas. Jo teigimu, dėl šio mechanizmo pereinamojoje zonoje laikosi stabilus vandens rezervuaras.

B.Schmandtas taip pat mano, kad šis tyrimas atskleidžia tikrąją mūsų vandenynų kilmę: „Paviršinis vanduo, kurį dabar turime, atsirado iš pačios Žemės uolienų.“

Tolesni tyrimai padės geriau suprasti vandens judėjimo ciklus mūsų planetoje ir tektoninių plokščių judėjimo įtaką šiems procesams.
